13-01-2018: Tackling invasive rhododendron at Kingston Hill with the Environment Trust

Now you don't see me...
We had our last Rhodo bash of the winter on Saturday.
We had another fantastic turnout of Duke of Edinburgh volunteers with the Environment Trust as well as KUBAG volunteers. This meant that we were able to start to clear new areas of Rhododendron which we had never tackled before!

Tool box talk
We started the session with our usual safety demonstration, after which we split up into smaller groups to tackle the rhodo.

I’ll let the photos below do most of the talking, but can you spot the differences in the before and after images at the end of the blog?
Heading where no rhodo bashers have gone before
Clearing through the dominate understorey
Coordinating root clearance
Events good enough to come back to uni for! KU alumni join in
Cut and...
...and clear

Sam leads the way
A quick break for lunch and a team photo then...

Unexpected visitor to planet green
Keep on clearing
Heave on 1...2...3!
Clearing up cut matter at the end of the day
Clearing virgin rhodo
A well earned rest at the end of the day!
The composite images below show you the before and after, can you spot the differences?

Our next events are the Bird Counts across all of our sites for the RSPB Big Garden Bird Count.

If you are able to help survey one of our sites, please email me biodiversity@kingston.ac.uk and I'll let you know where we still need help.

Surveys will be conducted between Friday 26th and Monday 29th Jan.
